We will board the Heyboy the evening of Thursday, June 26th and depart Grand Portage Friday morning. We will return to The marina following dives the afternoon of Monday June 30th. This trip will explore the historic shipwrecks that lie beneath the surface of Lake Superior around Isle Royale National Park. 80% of the park is underwater and the island is accessible only by boat or floatplane.
The normal charter season for Isle Royale starts in July and we have booked this special early trip to take advantage of the increased visibility (up to 70') and smaller crowds on the wrecks. We will have the choice of 9 major wrecks of different types including the incredible wreck of The America.
Depths range from 20' to 130', and all dives will be no-decompression dives. Expect water temperatures of 45 degrees or less at depth.
The Heyboy is a 33' Owens Cruiser which undergoes regular inspections. The Heyboy has modern navigational electronics, a 3000psi compressor, nitrox blending station, emergency oxygen equipment and in-water oxygen for safety stops. You can expect clean, well maintained accomodations and delicious homestyle meals. Sleeping accomodations are cozy but comfortable.
Ken Merryman is the captain of the Heyboy. Ken has been diving the waters of Isle Royale since 1973 and has been running charters since 1976. Ken is one of the founding members of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Preservation Society and holds certifications as a Divemaster and in 1st aid/CPR, & DAN Oxygen Provider.
